Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple
The Grandeur of Srisailam: While located on the border, the Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is deeply connected to Mahabubnagar pilgrims. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and also one of the 18 Shakti Peethas, making it a rare site where both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped in their supreme forms. The temple's history dates back to the Satavahana era, with subsequent contributions from the Vijayanagara kings and even Chhatrapati Shivaji. The main deity is Lord Mallikarjuna, worshipped as a Linga. The temple is situated in the dense Nallamala forests, adding a sense of wilderness to the pilgrimage. The spiritual aura is palpable as one enters the massive courtyards. Legends say that Adi Shankara composed his famous Sivananda Lahiri here. The temple is known as the "Kailash of the South." It serves as a major center for Vedic learning and Saivism. The architecture is a grand display of stone masonry and intricate pillars. Every stone here narrates a story from the Puranas. The journey through the forest to reach the temple is as soul-stirring as the darshan itself.
