Marottichal Waterfalls

Thrissur, Kerala, India
General Details: Marottichal Waterfalls is a pristine natural destination located in the Puthoor Panchayat. Unlike the more famous Athirappilly, Marottichal offers a raw and untouched experience of Kerala's forests. There are two main falls here: Olakkayam and Ilanjippara. Olakkayam is easily access ible, while Ilanjippara requires a trek through dense woods. The area is rich in biodiversity, housing various species of birds and butterflies. The name Marottichal comes from the "Marotti" trees abundant in the region. Interestingly, the village of Marottichal is famous for its obsession with Chess, a hobby the villagers took up to overcome an alcohol addiction problem. The waterfalls are part of a forest reserve, and the sound of cascading water combined with the chirping of birds makes it a paradise for nature lovers. It is an ideal spot for trekking, swimming, and picnicking away from the city's hustle.

Natural Forest Landscape: The "architecture" here is entirely natural. The Olakkayam falls are characterized by rocky outcrops and a deep natural pool. The Ilanjippara falls are much taller, cascading from a height of about 100 feet. The trek route features narrow forest paths, stream crossings, and giant tropical trees. The rocks can be slippery, so the natural design requires careful navigation. The forest canopy provides a natural shade, making the trek pleasant even in the afternoon. There are no man-made structures here, preserving its ecological integrity.
