Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India
A Monument of Empires: The Allahabad Pillar is a towering, single shaft of polished sandstone that holds immense historical and epigraphical significance. It was originally erected by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE and contains one of his famous Pillar Edicts. Its fame is amplifie d by the fact that it is a 'palimpsest' of Indian history, bearing inscriptions from three distinct, major empires: the Mauryan, the Gupta, and the Mughal. The pillar stands as a physical timeline of the subcontinent's most powerful dynasties. It is currently situated within the walls of the Allahabad Fort, a structure built much later by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583 AD. The Great Inscriptions: The most celebrated inscription is the Prashasti or eulogy of the great Gupta Emperor Samudragupta (4th century CE), composed by his court poet Harisena. This inscription details Samudragupta's military campaigns and administrative prowess, providing critical information about the Gupta Empire. Later, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir also had an inscription added in the early 17th century. The pillar has been moved and re-erected multiple times throughout history, adding to its complex narrative, and it is now maintained under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) within the fort premises. Location and Significance: The pillar’s location near the holy Triveni Sangam (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati) highlights the continuity of the site as a spiritual and political center of gravity for millennia. Its presence inside the Allahabad Fort, which is largely occupied by the Indian Army, means public access is highly restricted and subject to special permission, making it a unique and exclusive heritage site.
