The D'Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique protected area located on the riverine islands of the Siang (Brahmaputra) river. While it is technically in the East Siang district, it is frequently visited by tourists on the Tezu-Pasighat circuit. Established in 1978, the sanctuary covers an ar ea of 190 square kilometers, with 80% of it consisting of vast grasslands. This makes it one of the most important habitats for migratory birds in North East India. During the Winter months, the sanctuary becomes a bustling hub for avian visitors from Siberia and Mongolia. The landscape is characterized by river channels, alluvial grasslands, and patches of swampy forest. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including wild elephants, leopards, sambar deer, and the highly endangered Bengal Florican. The sanctuary is named after Daying Ering, a prominent political leader and social reformer of Arunachal Pradesh. Exploring the sanctuary often involves a combination of boat rides and trekking through the tall elephant grass. The ecosystem is very fragile and is shaped by the annual flooding of the Siang river, which replenishes the nutrients in the soil. For nature lovers, the silence of the sanctuary is only broken by the calls of the wild and the sound of the flowing river. It is a place where you can witness the raw power of nature as the river constantly shifts its course, creating new islands and eroding old ones. The sanctuary is also a crucial corridor for elephants moving between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Visiting D'Ering offers a different experience compared to the hilly forests of Tezu, as it provides wide-open vistas and a water-centric wildlife experience.
