The Bahubali Gomateshwara Monolith in Karkala is a massive 42-foot high statue carved from a single block of granite. It was consecrated in 1432 AD by King Veera Pandya Bhairarasa of the Santara dynasty. This monolith is the second tallest in Karnataka, only after Shravanabelagola. It stands on a r ocky hill overlooking the town, symbolizing renunciation and self-control. Bahubali, the son of the first Tirthankara Adinatha, is revered for his year-long meditation in a standing posture. The serene expression on the statue's face reflects deep spiritual peace and detachment from worldly desires. This site is a major pilgrimage for Jains worldwide and a historical marvel for travelers. The surrounding landscape offers a panoramic view of the Western Ghats. Visitors must climb nearly 200 steps to reach the summit where the statue stands. The energy at the top is incredibly calm and meditative, making it a perfect escape from the city hustle. Historical texts mention that the statue was inspired by the one at Shravanabelagola to spread Jainism in the coastal region. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and religious harmony of ancient Tulunadu.
