Historical Chronicle and Significance: The Milagres Church, officially the Church of Our Lady of Miracles (Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres), is a historic Roman Catholic church and one of the oldest in the Dakshina Kannada district. The original structure was built in 1680 by Bishop Thomas de C astro, a Theatine from Goa, making it the "Mother Church" of the Mangalorean Catholic community. The church complex has a dramatic history, including its destruction by Tipu Sultan in 1784 when he held Mangalorean Catholics captive. The faith persevered; a small chapel was built in 1811 on the current site, and the foundation for the present, much larger church was laid by Fr. A. Pinto and completed in 1911. The church symbolizes the deep roots of Christianity and the resilience of the local community. It is a central place of worship, located right in the bustling Hampankatta area, the heart of Mangalore. The complex includes a beautiful cemetery and a chapel, the St. Monica Chapel, housing the tomb of Bishop Thomas de Castro. The church's architecture and history serve as a beautiful testament to the syncretic and multicultural heritage of Mangalore. Its enduring presence in the city center makes it a significant social and religious landmark.
