Thattekad

Kerala, India
Thattekad, literally meaning 'flat forest' in Malayalam, is a picturesque region nestled between the branches of the Periyar River in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district, Kerala. It is primarily famous for the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (Thattekad Bird Sanctuary), the first bird sanctuary in Kerala, established in 1983 based on the recommendations of the legendary ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali. He described it as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India. Spanning about 25 square kilometres, this lowland forest area is a mix of tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous forests, home to over 320 species of birds, including many endemic and migratory species, making it a must-visit for bird watchers and nature lovers. The tranquil environment and lush greenery add to its charm.

Things To Do

The **Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary**, affectionately known as **Thattekad Bird Sanctuary**, is a haven for avian enthusiasts and holds the distinction of being **Kerala's** inaugural bird sanctuary. Established in 1983, it owes its existence to the pioneering efforts of Dr. **Salim Ali**, the celebrated 'Birdman of **India**', who, in the 1930s, identified this 25 square kilometre stretch of lush lowland forest as an unparalleled bird habitat. Situated strategically on the northern bank of the **Periyar** River, the sanctuary is characterized by a unique blend of tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous forests, interspersed with teak, rosewood, and mahogany plantations. This varied vegetation creates a perfect ecosystem supporting an extraordinary diversity of birdlife—over 320 species have been recorded. Birdwatchers flock here, particularly between **October** and **March**, to witness endemic species like the **Ceylon Frogmouth**, **Malabar Grey Hornbill**, **Wynaad Laughingthrush**, and the vivid **Malabar Trogon**, alongside various migratory visitors. The tranquil setting, coupled with the symphony of birdsong, offers a profoundly immersive nature experience, attracting researchers, photographers, and tourists seeking solitude amidst rich biodiversity. The sanctuary also plays host to a small population of mammals like the Asian Elephant, Leopard, Sloth Bear, and Sambar Deer, enhancing the overall wilderness appeal.
**Bhoothathankettu** is a scenic dam and barrage site, which translates literally to 'Monster Fort' or 'Ghost Fort,' a name linked to a local legend stating that the natural granite-rock formations in the **Periyar** River were set by a 'Bhootham' (ghost/spirit) to divert the river. The modern barrage, constructed later, utilizes these ancient rock formations as a foundation, creating a large, tranquil reservoir. Located approximately **6 KMS** from the **Thattekad Bird Sanctuary**, it serves as a crucial component of the region’s ecotourism circuit. The barrage holds back the water of the **Periyar** River, creating an expansive, calm lake that is perfect for boating. The surrounding area is lush with forest cover and is a popular picnic spot for families and tourists. It acts as a natural habitat extension for birds and a variety of aquatic life. The presence of a children's park and a well-maintained garden adds to its appeal as a recreational and leisure destination. It offers a stunning contrast between human engineering (the dam) and raw, geological history (the rock formations), all set within the verdant landscape of the low-lying **Western Ghats** foothills.
The **Injathotty Hanging Bridge** is a remarkable feat of local engineering and a major scenic attraction near **Thattekad**. It holds the distinction of being considered the **longest suspension footbridge** in **Kerala**, spanning an impressive length across the mighty **Periyar** River. The bridge was primarily built to connect the two banks of the river, linking the villages of **Injathotty** and **Thattekad** (or nearby settlements) and providing a safe, all-weather crossing for local residents, especially schoolchildren. For tourists, however, the bridge is a destination in itself. Walking across the narrow, gently swaying steel structure provides an exhilarating experience and offers panoramic, breathtaking views of the vast, forested riverbanks, the tranquil river waters, and the distant hills of the **Western Ghats**. The structure is nestled within a very scenic, dense green environment, making it a favourite spot for photography and for experiencing the tranquil rural-forest interface of **Kerala**. Its close proximity to the **Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary** makes it a perfect, easily accessible stopover that combines local utility with a thrilling tourist experience.
