Travel Tips Of Khasbag Maidan

Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India
The Khasbag Maidan, officially known as the Rajarshi Shahu Khasbag Wrestling Stadium, is a monumental and historic wrestling arena in Kolhapur. Constructed nearly a century ago by Shree Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, it stands as the largest wrestling stadium in India, boasting an impressive seating capaci ty of over 30,000 spectators. This heritage site is a living testament to Kolhapur's rich wrestling heritage, known locally as kushti. The stadium's unique design resembles a circular concave bowl or saucer, ensuring that the central wrestling ring, known as the Houd, is clearly visible from every corner of the maidan. This architectural feature highlights the foresight of its builders in promoting the traditional sport. The stadium has witnessed countless small to medium-scale wrestling competitions, hosting renowned wrestlers and satisfying crores of spectators over the years, making it a place of honor for the wrestling community. Special seating arrangements were historically reserved for members of the Kolhapur royal family on the east side of the Houd. While primarily dedicated to kushti, the venue is also used for large-scale cultural events, such as singing programs and shows by cine artists, utilizing a big stage on the east side of the ground. Its proximity to the Old Palace makes it an easily accessible and significant cultural landmark. The ground continues to uphold the tradition of wrestling, a sport that Kolhapur is famously known for, drawing enthusiasts who wish to experience this vibrant part of Maratha culture and history firsthand.

Tourism Tips

Health & safety: If attending a live wrestling event, be aware of the large crowd and ensure you have a clear exit path. The area is open, so use a hat/cap and sunscreen during the day. Be mindful of uneven ground if walking around the spectator areas.

Packing: Carry water, a hat, and binoculars (if you want a closer view of the central Houd). If attending a major event, carry only essential items to minimize security hassle and inconvenience in the crowd.

Accommodation: Staying in a hotel in the central areas like Mangalwar Peth or near the Mahalaxmi Temple is ideal due to its proximity and central location within the city.

Other Different Topics: Check the local news or sports announcements to see if a Kushti Competition is scheduled before your visit, as this is the best time to experience the maidan. The stadium may look non-operational on non-event days, but its architectural scale is still impressive. Visit the nearby Keshavrao Bhosale Drama Theatre or the Old Palace (Bhavani Mandap) as they are within walking distance.
