Travel Tips Of Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple

Thrissur, Kerala, India
The Kodungallur Shrine: Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple, also known as Sree Kurumba Bhagavathi Temple, is one of the oldest temples in India. Dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, she is worshipped in her fierce form. The temple is believed to have been established by the legendary Cheraman Perumal. It is regarded as the head of all Bhadrakali temples across Kerala. The idol of the goddess is carved from a jackfruit tree and has eight arms. The temple is famous for the Bharani festival, which is one of the most eccentric in Kerala. During this festival, devotees sing esoteric songs and perform unusual rituals. The temple was once a Shiva shrine, as evidenced by the presence of a Shiva idol. The secret underground chamber inside the temple is said to be the source of its power. This chamber is never opened and remains a subject of great mystery. The temple architecture is a classic example of the Kerala style with intricate wood carvings. The vast temple compound is shaded by ancient banyan and peepal trees. Devotees offer Kozhikkallu Moodal as a ritual during the festival. The atmosphere is charged with spiritual energy and ancient traditions. It is located in the historic town of Kodungallur, which was an ancient port. The temple welcomes thousands of pilgrims every year, especially from the northern parts of Kerala. The rituals here are unique and different from other mainstream temples. The presence of the goddess is believed to protect the land from evil. It is a site of immense historical and religious importance. The temple provides a deep insight into the ethnic religious practices of the region.
