Gopachal Parvat Jain Sculptures

Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India
The Gopachal Parvat Jain Sculptures represent a monumental collection of rock-cut figures located on the slopes of the Gwalior Fort hill. Carved primarily during the Tomar dynasty rule between 1440 and 1473, these statues are dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras. The site contains nearly 1500 small a nd large idols, with the most magnificent being the 47-foot tall standing statue of Lord Adinatha. These carvings were unfortunately defaced during the invasion of Babur in 1527, yet they remain a testament to the spiritual devotion and artistic prowess of ancient India. Visiting this site offers a profound sense of tranquility as one observes the meditative poses of the Tirthankaras amidst the rugged sandstone cliffs. It is considered a Siddha Kshetra, a place of liberation for Jain monks.
