Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod

Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India
Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod is a sacred Sikh shrine located within the massive Gwalior Fort. It commemorates the release of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, who was imprisoned here by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir for two years. The name "Data Bandi Chhod" translates to "The Giver of Free dom." Legend says the Guru agreed to be released only if 52 Hindu Rajas, also held captive, were freed with him. To satisfy the Emperor's condition that only those holding the Guru's robe could leave, the Guru had a special cloak made with 52 tassels. Each king held a tassel and walked out to freedom. Today, the Gurudwara stands as a symbol of selfless service and justice. The atmosphere inside is incredibly peaceful, with the continuous chanting of the Guru Granth Sahib providing a spiritual balm to all visitors.
