How To Reach Anandbagh Palace

Anandbagh Palace, also historically known as Lakshmivilas Palace, is a significant monument in Darbhanga, constructed during the reign of Maharaja Lakshmeshwar Singh in the 1880s. It was severely damaged in the devastating 1934 Nepal-Bihar earthquake but was subsequently rebuilt, maintaining much of its royal grandeur. The palace is a symbol of the immense patronage and wealth of the Darbhanga Raj. Its original complex was famous for its extensive and beautiful gardens, stables, and even botanical and zoological gardens, though many of these have since disappeared. The palace complex, particularly the main palace building, was generously donated to the Government of Bihar by Maharaja Kameshwar Singh to establish a university dedicated to the promotion of the Sanskrit language. Today, it serves as the head office of the Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University (KSDSU). The history of the palace is deeply interwoven with the Mithila region's past, showcasing the blend of royal power, cultural promotion, and architectural ambition of the Khandwala dynasty rulers. The structure stands as a testament to the resilient spirit of the Raj, which faced natural calamities and transitions of power. How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Darbhanga Airport (DBR), which is relatively close, approximately 6-7 KMS away. From the airport, one can hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw directly to the university campus in Kameshwar Nagar. For more connectivity, Patna's Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport (PAT) is a major hub, about 140 KMS away, requiring a longer road or train journey to Darbhanga.

By Train: Darbhanga Junction (DBG) is the main railway station, a major hub in the region, well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Patna. The palace is about 3 KMS from the station. Taxis, auto-rickshaws, and cycle rickshaws are readily available outside the station for the short ride.

By Road: Darbhanga is well-connected by National Highway (NH 57) and State Highways. The palace is easily accessible by private car or hired taxi. Local buses run to the general area of Kameshwar Nagar, and the university is a prominent landmark, often cited as a key reference point for local transport. Good roads make for a comfortable drive from nearby cities like Muzaffarpur or Patna.

By Local Transport: The best way to reach is by local auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw (often called "E-Rickshaw" or "Battery Rickshaw"). These are inexpensive and operate throughout the city, providing quick and easy access from the railway station or any point in the city center.
