How To Reach Buraburi Than

Goalpara, Assam, India
Buraburi Than is an ancient and revered religious site located in the Goalpara district of Assam. It holds significant local mythological and spiritual value. The Than is particularly notable for symbolizing national integration, as people from various religious and cultural backgrounds participate in its spiritual activities, despite it being primarily associated with Hindu traditions. The primary objects of reverence are two stones, which according to local tradition, are believed to be the transformed forms of a man and an old lady who regularly provided Payas (sweet rice pudding) as prasad (offering) to local cowboys (Rakhal) many years ago. These two stones are deeply believed to bring happiness and prosperity to the devotees who visit the sacred spot. The atmosphere is generally peaceful and surrounded by lush greenery, making it a place for spiritual solace and quiet reflection. It is situated in the scenic area of Madratola, near the mighty Brahmaputra River. Visitors often come to offer prayers, make wishes, and partake in the serene environment. The site is a key component of Goalpara's cultural and religious landscape, attracting pilgrims and tourists throughout the year. The term Than generally refers to a sacred place in Assamese culture, often associated with a shrine or a spot of historical or religious significance.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, which is approximately 130-140 KMS from Goalpara town. This airport is well-connected to all major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. From Guwahati Airport, one must hire a pre-paid taxi/cab directly to Goalpara (a journey of about 3-4 hours) or take a city bus/auto to the main Guwahati bus stand and then board a direct bus to Goalpara. From Goalpara town, take local transport (auto-rickshaw or taxi) for the final ~10 KMS to Buraburi Than in Madratola.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Goalpara Town Railway Station (GLPT), which is located conveniently close to the city center, roughly 3 KMS from the town. It is connected by direct or connecting trains from major cities, particularly from other parts of Assam, West Bengal (Kolkata, New Jalpaiguri), and North India. Upon arriving at the station, numerous options are available: you can hire an auto-rickshaw or a local taxi from the railway station for the short ride to the center of Goalpara and then proceed to the Than, or hire a direct transport to the Madratola area where the Than is situated.

By Road: Goalpara is well-connected by National Highways (like NH-17 and NH-27 in the vicinity) and State Highways. Regular public and private bus services (ASTC, private operators) connect Goalpara to Guwahati (about 3-4 hours), Dhubri, Bongaigaon, and other parts of Assam and neighbouring states. The Goalpara Bus Station is about 2 KMS from the city center. From the bus station, hire an auto-rickshaw or local taxi. Driving to Goalpara is scenic, especially along the Brahmaputra valley. The final 10 KM stretch to Madratola will be via local roads, which are motorable.

By Local Transport: From Goalpara town center (near the bus stand or market area), the most practical way to reach Buraburi Than is by hiring a local auto-rickshaw or a cycle-rickshaw (for shorter distances within town, not ideal for 10 KM). Alternatively, local taxis/cabs can be hired for the round trip. Ensure you negotiate the fare with the driver before starting the journey, as the Than is outside the immediate town limit.
