Kolakham

Kalimpong, West Bengal, India
Kolakham is a small village perched on a hilltop at an altitude of 6,100 feet, bordering the world-renowned Neora Valley National Park. It is a dream destination for those looking for absolute seclusion and a deep connection with the wild. The village overlooks the mighty Kanchenjunga and offers a unique vantage point from where the mountain seems almost at arm's length. The surroundings are dominated by dense tropical and coniferous forests, home to rare wildlife like the Red Panda, Clouded Leopard, and Himalayan Black Bear. The primary occupation of the villagers is cardamom farming, but eco-tourism has recently become a major livelihood. Unlike other commercial hill stations, Kolakham provides an unadulterated experience of nature where the silence is only broken by the sound of waterfalls and bird calls. The village is also famous for its proximity to the Changey Falls, a magnificent waterfall that drops from a height of 400 feet. The ethnic population consists mainly of the Rai community, who are known for their rich cultural heritage and colorful traditional dances. Staying in Kolakham is an education in sustainable living, as the homestays are built with minimal impact on the environment. It is a perfect base for high-altitude trekking and wildlife photography.

Eco-Cottages and Timber Huts: The architecture in Kolakham is specifically designed to blend with the wilderness of Neora Valley. Most tourist accommodations are built as "Eco-Huts" using treated pine wood and local stones. A standard cottage usually has a floor area of 150-180 square feet, featuring steep gabled roofs to shed heavy monsoon rain. The structures are often elevated on stone stilts about 2 feet off the ground to protect against dampness and forest insects. Large glass panels, often measuring 5x6 feet, are a staple feature to allow guests to view the peaks from their beds. The ceilings are typically finished with woven bamboo mats, providing a rustic aesthetic and thermal insulation. Each unit is spaced at least 20 feet apart to maintain the "forest feel" and ensure privacy.
