3 days itinerary for Dooars
Day-1
Journey from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri/Siliguri & Travel to Lataguri
Begin your journey early from Kolkata via flight to Bagdogra or train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP). Upon arrival, hire a pre-booked cab to travel towards Lataguri, the gateway to Gorumara National Park. This drive takes you through scenic tea gardens and dense forests. On the way, enjoy breakfast at a highway dhaba. After checking into your resort by afternoon, have lunch and spend the day settling in. The surrounding landscapes offer a perfect introduction to the lush greenery of the Dooars region, setting the tone for the adventure ahead in this biodiverse paradise.
Time: 06:00 - 13:00
Estimated Cost: 2500
Note: Book your train/flight tickets at least 3 months in advance. Use reputable car rental services from NJP station to avoid last-minute hassles.
Gorumara National Park Jeep Safari
After a hearty lunch at your resort, head straight for the Gorumara National Park Jeep Safari. This park is famous for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses and Asian elephants. As you traverse the forest trails, you will be accompanied by an experienced guide who will help spot wildlife amidst the tall sal trees. The excitement of seeing animals in their natural habitat is unparalleled. Make sure to carry your binoculars and camera. Watching the sunset from one of the watchtowers inside the forest is a magical experience that concludes your first day in the wilderness.
Time: 15:00 - 18:00
Estimated Cost: 1500
Note: Jeep safaris must be booked online in advance. Afternoon slots are generally better for spotting rhinos near the water holes.
Resort Dinner & Local Tribal Dance
Conclude your day with a traditional dinner at your resort, featuring local North Bengal delicacies like 'Shukto' or 'Aloo Posto'. Many resorts in Lataguri organize a brief tribal dance performance in the evening, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the local Oraon and Munda communities. Watching the dancers move to the rhythm of local folk music while enjoying a bonfire is a great way to unwind after a long day of travel and wildlife exploration. It offers a deep, authentic connection to the cultural roots of the Dooars region, leaving you refreshed for the next day.
Time: 20:00 - 21:00
Estimated Cost: 800
Note: Check with your resort beforehand if they organize cultural shows. Participate respectfully and ask before taking videos.
Day-2
Jhalong & Bindu Valley
Start your second day with an early breakfast and drive towards Jhalong and Bindu. Located along the Jaldhaka River, these spots offer breathtaking views of the riverbed and the Indo-Bhutan border. Jhalong is famous for its hydel project and diverse birdlife, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Bindu, being the last village on the Indian side, provides a stunning view of the confluence of three streams. The serene atmosphere, combined with the backdrop of the Himalayan foothills, makes this a photographer’s dream. Spend time walking along the riverbank and soaking in the tranquil surroundings away from urban life.
Time: 08:00 - 12:00
Estimated Cost: 1200
Note: Carry your original identity proof as this area is close to the international border. The road can be winding, so keep motion sickness pills handy.
Rocky Island Lunch
For lunch, head towards the Rocky Island, a scenic spot on the banks of the Murti River. The area is named for its massive river boulders and is known for its beautiful picnic settings. You can enjoy a simple, freshly prepared picnic lunch while listening to the sound of the flowing river. The water is crystal clear and shallow in parts, allowing you to dip your feet and relax. This location is less crowded, offering a peaceful break in the middle of your day. It’s an ideal spot to sit back, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and recharge.
Time: 13:00 - 15:00
Estimated Cost: 500
Note: Pack some extra snacks as there are very few organized restaurants here. Always carry away your trash to maintain the environment.
Murti River Bank Sunset
Spend the late afternoon and evening by the Murti River. The river is the lifeline of the Dooars, and its banks are perfect for long, contemplative walks. As the sun sets, the sky transforms into shades of orange and violet, reflecting over the flowing water. This is an excellent time for nature lovers to observe the river ecosystem. You might spot various species of kingfishers or eagles. Sitting on the smooth river stones while watching the day fade away provides a meditative experience, deeply grounding you in the natural beauty of North Bengal before you head back for dinner.
Time: 16:00 - 19:00
Estimated Cost: 200
Note: Avoid entering the deep water, as the currents can be unpredictable. Carry a light jacket as temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
Day-3
Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary
On your final day, start with breakfast and visit the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. Known for being one of the oldest sanctuaries in India, it is a haven for elephants and gaurs (Indian bison). The dense canopy of trees and the quietude of the forest create a serene morning atmosphere. You can visit the watchtower to catch glimpses of animals coming out to graze or drink water. The morning light filtering through the trees provides excellent photo opportunities. It is a peaceful yet exciting way to spend your last morning, observing the majestic wildlife in a pristine environment before the return journey.
Time: 07:00 - 11:00
Estimated Cost: 1000
Note: Reach early at dawn to maximize your chances of animal sightings. Maintain absolute silence to avoid scaring away the wildlife.
Samsing & Suntalekhola
Proceed to the charming villages of Samsing and Suntalekhola for a quick lunch and a final nature walk. These villages are nestled among terraced tea gardens and forests. Suntalekhola is famous for its hanging bridge and trekking trails. The cool, crisp air and the lush green surroundings are incredibly refreshing. It feels like stepping into a postcard. Enjoy a local meal at a small homestay, which serves the most authentic mountain-style food. Exploring the footpaths and the small streams here is a fantastic way to conclude your trip with memories of the tranquil North Bengal landscape.
Time: 12:00 - 14:00
Estimated Cost: 600
Note: Wear comfortable walking shoes for the short treks. Respect local residents by asking permission before photographing their homes.
Drive back to NJP/Bagdogra & Departure
Start your journey back from the hills to the plains towards NJP or Bagdogra. Reflect on your three-day escape while driving past the expansive tea estates of Malbazar. Ensure you plan for sufficient time to cover the distance, accounting for potential traffic. As you leave the green embrace of the Dooars, the change in atmosphere reminds you of the quiet majesty you just experienced. Grab a quick tea and snack on the way. Once you reach the airport or station, check in for your return journey to Kolkata, carrying home a treasure trove of wildlife and mountain memories.
Time: 15:00 - 20:00
Estimated Cost: 2000
Note: Buffer time for traffic near Siliguri is essential. Confirm your travel documents and tickets before leaving the resort.
