Diskit Monastery

Diskit Monastery is the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra Valley. It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery was founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsongkhapa. The monastery is situated on a hill overlooking the Shyok River an d the Diskit village. The main attraction is the magnificent 32-meter (105 feet) tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, which was inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama. The monastery is a center for Buddhist teachings and is known for its peaceful and serene atmosphere.
