Over the decades, the structure has been renovated and expanded, transitioning from the colonial-era 'Superintendent's Residence' to 'Raj Niwas' and finally to the current 'Raj Bhavan' following Mizoram's statehood in 1987. The building symbolizes the continuity of state power and governance, moving from colonial administration to Indian democracy. Due to its status as a high-security government building, public access is heavily restricted, and it is viewed mostly from the outside or from vantage points like the Laipuitlang View Point. It is a crucial landmark representing the political capital of Mizoram, often serving as the backdrop for official ceremonies, dignitary visits, and the administration of oaths for Chief Ministers and Ministers. The grounds themselves are known for being well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing, befitting a symbol of state dignity.
