How To Reach Raj Bhavan

Aizawl, Mizoram, India
Administrative Significance and Historical Foundation:: The Raj Bhavan of Mizoram, the official residence of the Governor, holds immense administrative and historical importance. The original structure was established in 1898 for the Superintendent of the Lushai Hills District, Major J. Shakespear, and was designed by his wife. It was initially built using local materials like timber and bamboo shingles, reflecting early colonial construction adapted to the remote, hilly environment. Over the decades, the structure has been renovated and expanded, transitioning from the colonial-era 'Superintendent's Residence' to 'Raj Niwas' and finally to the current 'Raj Bhavan' following Mizoram's statehood in 1987. The building symbolizes the continuity of state power and governance, moving from colonial administration to Indian democracy. Due to its status as a high-security government building, public access is heavily restricted, and it is viewed mostly from the outside or from vantage points like the Laipuitlang View Point. It is a crucial landmark representing the political capital of Mizoram, often serving as the backdrop for official ceremonies, dignitary visits, and the administration of oaths for Chief Ministers and Ministers. The grounds themselves are known for being well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing, befitting a symbol of state dignity.

How to Reach

By Air:: Arrive at Lengpui Airport (AJL) (~32 KM). Hire a pre-paid taxi to Aizawl city and specifically to the Raj Bhavan area in Khatla; the drive takes about 1. 5 hours through the city's winding roads.

By Train:: From Sairang Railway Station (~25 KM), take a taxi to Aizawl city; once in the central area, you can easily take a local cab to the Raj Bhavan area, which is well-known to all drivers.

By Road:: Take the shared taxi (SUMO/Bolero) from Silchar or Guwahati to the main Aizawl ISBT. From the ISBT, hire a local taxi or auto-rickshaw for the final few kilometers to the top of the ridge where the building is located.

By Local Transport:: Local taxis are the best way to get here; ask the driver to take you to the "Raj Bhavan Gate" in Khatla locality. Be prepared for the driver to wait if you plan on taking external photos, as transport can be scarce on the immediate street.
