How To Reach Deolo Hill

Kalimpong, West Bengal, India
Deolo Hill is arguably the most recognizable tourist destination in Kalimpong, primarily because it is the town's highest point, peaking at an elevation of around 1,704 meters (5,590 feet). Its elevation provides stunning views, much like Durpin Dara, but Deolo has been deliberately developed into a recreational and leisure destination by the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC). The summit features a beautifully landscaped garden and a vast, open plateau area, making it ideal for walking, picnicking, and simple relaxation. It offers a spectacular, sweeping view of the surrounding valleys, including the Teesta River on one side and the Relli River on the other. On a clear day, the entire Kalimpong town lies visible below, resembling a giant, tiered structure built into the hillside. The hill also boasts a well-maintained tourism complex, which includes a travelers' lodge and several flower nurseries, adding to its appeal as a family destination. Deolo's appeal is distinct from Durpin Dara's; while the latter is known for its pure, spiritual views, Deolo is famed for its accessibility, open spaces, and the opportunity for light adventure activities like paragliding. The hill is a crucial water source for Kalimpong town, hosting two major reservoirs that supply the municipality. The road leading to the top is lined with beautiful pine and cypress trees, making the journey itself very scenic. The crisp mountain air and the expansive sense of space at the summit are major drawcards. It represents a modern approach to mountain tourism, focusing on leisure and wide-open park-like settings, making it particularly popular with local families and groups who come to spend an entire day enjoying the tranquility and the views. How to Reach

By Air: The primary gateway is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in Siliguri, located about 80 KMS away. After landing, hire a private taxi directly to Kalimpong. The journey takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Once in Kalimpong town, Deolo Hill is located another 7 KMS uphill. All local taxis and jeeps are familiar with the route, which is a well-maintained road leading to the summit. It is recommended to book a vehicle for the entire round trip from the town center.

By Train: The nearest major rail head is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station, which is approximately 77 KMS away. NJP is connected to all major Indian cities. From the station, book a reserved or shared taxi for the scenic 3 to 4-hour drive to Kalimpong. Once in the town, local transport is necessary to cover the last stretch. Deolo Hill is a popular destination, so reserved taxis are easily available from the NJP taxi stand to take you directly to the top of Deolo if you prefer.

By Road: Deolo Hill is approximately 7 KMS from the main market area of Kalimpong and is connected by a well-paved, uphill motorable road. From Siliguri, the road follows NH10 to Kalimpong. Once in town, the most common way to reach the hill is by hiring a local taxi. The road is scenic, passing through small local settlements and pine forests, and the drive takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the town center, depending on the traffic and the specific pickup point.

By Local Transport: Reserved taxis are the most efficient way to reach Deolo Hill from Kalimpong town. They can be hired from Damber Chowk or your hotel. Shared jeeps are less common for the direct route to the summit, as the road is slightly remote. For a different experience, a strenuous but rewarding trek or hike to the top is an option for fit visitors, following the winding road or local shortcuts, but this should only be attempted during daylight hours and preferably with a local guide. Always confirm the round-trip taxi fare before starting the journey.
