How To Reach Saint Mary's Cathedral

Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India
Saint Mary's Cathedral, also known as the Church of Our Lady of Seven Dolours, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madurai. Its history traces back to a small chapel built by Italian Jesuit missionary Fr. John de Britto in 1676. The current structure, however, has undergone several phas es of reconstruction and expansion. The initial replacement church was built in 1840, and it was elevated to the status of a Cathedral in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. The present-day edifice is a striking and serene example of Indo-Gothic and European architectural styles, featuring two lofty steeples that are prominent landmarks in the city skyline, contrasting sharply with the traditional temple gopurams. The Cathedral is a symbol of the enduring presence of Christianity in South India, serving a large local Catholic community. It is a place of daily worship, contemplation, and religious education. The church's cool, peaceful interior provides a significant contrast to the bustling, often chaotic energy of the surrounding city. Its location near the old palace area speaks to the deep historical intermingling of different cultures and religions in Madurai over the centuries, reflecting a tradition of religious tolerance and co-existence that the city has long upheld. The religious significance is heightened during major Christian festivals like Christmas and Easter, when the church is beautifully decorated and hosts grand ceremonies. The Cathedral offers a spiritual refuge and a fascinating architectural study for visitors of all faiths.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Madurai International Airport (IXM), located about 12 KMS from the city center. A pre-paid taxi or a ride-share service can be hired directly to the East Veli Street area near the Cathedral. Travel time is approximately 30-40 minutes.

By Train: The closest major rail hub is Madurai Junction Railway Station (MDU), which is only about 2. 5 KMS away. From the railway station, you can easily hire an auto-rickshaw (a ride of about 10 minutes) or a taxi. The Cathedral is a well-known landmark, so drivers will know the location.

By Road: Madurai is well-served by an extensive network of National and State Highways. Buses arriving at the Mattuthavani Bus Terminus or Arapalayam Bus Stand will require a subsequent local bus or auto-rickshaw ride to the city center where the Cathedral is located. East Veli Street is a central road in the old city.

By Local Transport: The most convenient local transport option is the auto-rickshaw. Always confirm the fare with the driver before getting in, as meters are rarely used. Local city buses running through East Veli Street or the Mahal Area also provide an inexpensive option, though they can be crowded. The central location makes it easy to find a cab or auto at any time of day.
