The Seemanthi Bai Government Museum, also locally known as the Bejai Museum, is the only museum in Mangalore and is a repository of archaeological, historical, and ethnographic artifacts. It was established on May 4, 1960, following a generous donation. The museum is housed in the historic, distinc tively shaped bungalow that once belonged to Dr. Vaman Raghunath Mirajkar. The building itself is an architectural wonder, said to have been designed and constructed in 1935 to resemble the architectural styles of Milan, Italy, and is distinctly shaped like a ship or an aeroplane, making it a landmark in its own right. Dr. Mirajkar donated the house and his extensive private collection of antiquities and contemporary masterpieces, which he acquired during his travels across India and the world, to the government in 1955. The museum was then named in honor of his mother, Srimanthi Bai. The collections are diverse, spanning the fields of natural history, geology, archaeology, and ethnography, with highlights including ancient coins, paintings, statues, and a very significant copper inscription from 1624 AD related to Keladi Venkatappa Nayaka. It also houses a notable Gandhiji Photo Gallery showcasing rare photographs of the Mahatma's life.

How to Reach

By Air: Mangalore International Airport (IXE) is about 10 KM away. Hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw to the Bejai area. The journey should take around 20-30 minutes.

By Train: The museum is centrally located. Mangalore Central Railway Station (MAQ) is about 4 KM away, and Mangalore Junction (MAJN) is about 7 KM away. Take an auto-rickshaw directly to the Bejai area (Bejai Museum is a well-known landmark).

By Road: The museum is situated on Bejai Road in the Bejai neighborhood, a prominent city area. It is easily reachable from Hampankatta (City Center) by car or bus in about 15 minutes. The road is steep and narrow on the final approach to the hilltop.

By Local Transport: Local city buses frequently pass through the Bejai area. Ask for the stop near Bejai Church or the Lighthouse Hill area. Auto-rickshaws are the most convenient option, and the fare from the city center should be reasonable.
