Man Singh Palace

Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India
Man Singh Palace, also known as Man Mandir, is arguably the most beautiful structure within the Gwalior Fort complex. Built by Raja Man Singh Tomar between 1486 and 1516, it is a masterpiece of Hindu architecture. The palace is famous for its vibrant exterior, adorned with blue, yellow, and green t iled mosaics featuring figures of elephants, peacocks, and crocodiles. It consists of two open courtyards and two underground floors. During the Mughal era, the underground levels were converted into a prison, where Emperor Aurangzeb famously imprisoned and executed his brother Murad. The palace interior features intricate stone carvings and a sophisticated ventilation system that keeps the rooms cool even in peak summer. The "Jhulaghar" and "Bathing Tank" are significant parts of the royal quarters. Exploring the dark, maze-like passages of the lower floors offers a thrilling experience. The palace stands as a testament to the artistic vision of the Tomar Rajputs before the fort passed into Mughal hands.

The palace is a four-story structure, with two levels situated underground. Its dimensions cover a significant portion of the fort's eastern edge. The most striking feature is the Tile Work on the outer walls, which remains surprisingly bright after 500 years. The interior courtyards are surrounded by rooms with Carved Brackets and circular domes. The stone screens (Jalis) are exceptionally delicate. The underground dungeons feature massive 16-sided pillars and a unique "Telephone" system—hollow pipes in walls for communication.
