The Kalachand Temple is a crucial temple in the architectural history of Bishnupur. Built in 1656 AD by King Raghunath Singha, it is considered one of the earliest examples of the Eka-Ratna (single tower) style constructed from laterite stone in the region. Dedicated to Lord Krishna (Kalachand), the temple once housed the deity but sadly no longer does. The temple stands on a square platform with a sloping roof and a towering shikhara (pinnacle). Although much of its original elaborate stucco decoration has been lost, the traces still visible hint at the artistry of the time. The structure is characterized by its simplicity and robust laterite construction, marking a shift from the earlier intricate brickwork.
