Jor Mandir Complex

Bishnupur, West Bengal, India
The Jor Mandir Complex, also known as Jor Bangla Temple or Keshto Ray Temple, is one of the most remarkable and well-preserved temples in Bishnupur. The name "Jor Bangla" translates to "twin thatched huts," which perfectly describes its unique architectural style. Built by Malla King Raghunath Singh a Dev II in 1655 CE, the temple is a prime example of the "do-chala" or "Bangla" style of architecture, where two thatched huts are joined together to form a single structure. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radha. What makes this temple truly special is the incredible amount of detailed terracotta work that covers almost every inch of its surface, both inside and out. These plaques vividly depict scenes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the life of Lord Krishna, along with a variety of social scenes from the Malla period. The intricate storytelling through art is a key feature of the Jor Bangla Temple, offering a fascinating visual narrative of ancient epics and a glimpse into the society of the 17th century.

Things To Do

  • ...
Detailed Exploration of Terracotta: Spend time carefully examining the terracotta panels. The temple's detailed carvings are its main attraction. Look for specific scenes from the Ramayana (like the battle of Lanka) and the Mahabharata (Bhisma's arrow bed). Also, identify panels depicting the life of Lord Krishna, such as him as a child (Balgopal) or his dance with the gopis (Rasamandala).

Architectural Appreciation: Walk around the temple to fully appreciate its unique "Jor Bangla" architecture. Observe how the two "huts" are joined and the single tower that rises from their intersection. The curved cornices and the sloping roofs are all inspired by traditional Bengali cottages, and understanding this context adds to the appreciation of the structure.

Architectural Style and Features: The Jor Mandir Complex is an outstanding example of the Jor Bangla style, a unique form of Bengali architecture. The main temple is a "do-chala" structure, meaning it consists of two curved, sloping roofs joined together. This design mimics the traditional huts of the region, but it is built of laterite bricks, which were the predominant material of the Malla dynasty. A single tower or sikhara crowns the roof at the junction of the two huts, making it an Eka-Ratna type. The temple stands on a raised stone platform. The facade is adorned with three arched entrances, and the walls are covered with terracotta art.

Dimensions and Terracotta Artistry: The temple stands on a platform measuring approximately 15. 63 meters in length and 15. 67 meters in width. The temple itself measures about 11. 77 meters by 11. 7 meters and rises to a height of 10. 7 meters. The terracotta work is the most prominent feature. The plaques cover all four sides of the structure and the interiors. They are incredibly detailed, showing scenes like the battle of Lanka, the Rasamandala, and various exploits of Lord Krishna. The art is so fine that it captures the emotions and actions of the figures with great precision, making the temple a masterpiece of terracotta craftsmanship.
