Hotels Near Shey Palace and Monastery

Leh, Ladakh, India
Shey Palace and Monastery was once the summer capital of the Namgyal kings of Ladakh. The palace, now in ruins, was built in 1655 by King Deldan Namgyal. The main attraction is the monastery, which houses a magnificent two-story tall gilded copper statue of the seated Buddha Shakyamuni. The statue, which is the second-largest in Ladakh, was built in memory of the king's father. The monastery complex also includes a library and various murals. The hilltop location of the palace and monastery provides a commanding view of the Indus Valley and the surrounding landscape. Below the palace, there are hundreds of chortens (Buddhist stupas), of all shapes and sizes, which add to the spiritual significance of the place.
