Chand Kazi s Samadhi is one of the most historically fascinating and spiritually poignant sites in Mayapur. It is the memorial shrine (a Mazar or Dargah) of Maulana Sirajuddin, who held the title of Chand Kazi (Chief Magistrate of Navadvipa) during the 15th century rule of Bengal. Historically, the Kazi opposed the public chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra (Harinaam Sankirtan) led by Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, even going so far as to break the Mridanga (drum) of the devotees and forbid further chanting. This conflict escalated until Shri Chaitanya led a massive, unprecedented civil disobedience procession of thousands of people to the Kazi s house, demonstrating the power of the Bhakti movement. Following a miraculous intervention and philosophical discourse with the saint, the Kazi s heart changed completely.
