Sonepur Cattle Fair
The Sonepur Cattle Fair, also known as Harihar Kshetra Mela, is Asia's largest cattle fair and a spectacular event that draws millions of visitors. Held annually on the occasion of Kartik Purnima, the fair has a history dating back to ancient times. It is believed that Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the Mauryan Empire, used to buy elephants and horses for his army from this fair. Today, while the focus has shifted from animal trade to a more commercial and cultural spectacle, the fair retains its traditional charm. The fairgrounds, spread over a vast area near the confluence of the Ganga and Gandak rivers, become a vibrant marketplace with stalls selling everything from handicrafts and agricultural tools to clothes and toys. The fair is not just a commercial event but a cultural extravaganza, with folk dances, musical performances, magic shows, and circus acts.
