The Bagh Caves are a group of nine rock-cut monuments that stand as a testament to ancient Indian art. These caves were carved out of the perpendicular sandstone rock face of the Vindhya Range. Although only five caves have survived the test of time, they remain a pinnacle of Buddhist monastic arch itecture. Built during the 5th to 6th century AD, these caves served as Viharas or residential quarters for Buddhist monks. The site is world-renowned for its exquisite mural paintings, which are often compared to those found in the Ajanta Caves. The paintings here are more secular and materialistic in nature, depicting the lifestyle, music, and dance of that era rather than just religious themes. The Archaeological Survey of India has worked extensively to preserve these fragile treasures from erosion and decay. Visiting the entry point marks the beginning of a journey into India's golden age of art and spiritual history.
