Islam Nagar Fort, located on the outskirts of Bhopal, is a historic site that served as the original capital of the Bhopal State. Originally known as Jagadishpur and ruled by Rajput chieftains, it was captured by Dost Mohammad Khan in 1715, who renamed it Islam Nagar. The fort complex is a stunning example of the transition between Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. It houses several significant structures, including the Chaman Mahal (Garden Palace) and the Rani Mahal (Queen's Palace). The Chaman Mahal is famous for its beautiful formal gardens and fountains, while the Rani Mahal features a colonnaded courtyard and delicate floral motifs. The site is surrounded by fertile farmlands and offers a peaceful alternative to the bustling city. It played a crucial role in the early 18th-century history of central India, acting as a strategic stronghold before the capital was moved to Bhopal. Today, the fort remains well-preserved under the Archaeological Survey of India, showcasing the refined lifestyle of the early Nawabi era.
