Barpeta is popularly known as the "Satra Nagari" or the City of Monasteries in Assam. It is the spiritual heart of the Neo-Vaishnavite movement started by the saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva. The most significant landmark here is the Barpeta Satra, which was established by his primary disciple, Madhavdeva, in the 16th century. The Satra complex includes the "Kirtan Ghar," which is a massive prayer hall where devotees gather to sing "Borgeets" (devotional songs) and perform "Ankiya Naats" (traditional plays).
