General Details: The Longtarai Hill Range is one of the most prominent geographical features of Tripura, running north to south and acting as a natural divide within the Dhalai district. The name "Longtarai" translates to "Deep Valley" in the local Kokborok language, highlighting the dramatic elevat ion changes that characterize the area. These hills are cloaked in dense tropical forests and are home to several indigenous tribes who have lived in harmony with the land for centuries. The range reaches a peak height of about 482 meters, offering spectacular vistas of the surrounding plains and the distant mountains of Bangladesh. Geologically, the hills are composed of sandstone and shale, which have been carved by numerous streams into steep ridges and fertile valleys. The biodiversity here is immense, featuring a mix of evergreen trees, wild bananas, and a variety of ferns. The range is not just a natural wonder but also a spiritual one, as it is believed to be a resting place for deities. Trekking through these hills provides a unique window into the tribal way of life, where shifting cultivation (Jhum) is still practiced on the slopes. The air is perpetually cool, and the mist that often clings to the peaks adds an ethereal quality to the landscape.
