Agroha Mound
The Agroha Mound, also known as 'Ther', is an archaeological site of immense historical value. It represents the ruins of the ancient city of Agroha, which flourished from the 4th Century BC to the 14th Century AD. Excavations conducted by archaeologists like C.J. Rodgers and later by the Haryana G overnment have unearthed a wealth of artifacts. The site reveals a well-planned fortified city with residential houses, public buildings, and religious structures. It is believed to be the capital of the Agreya Republic and the seat of Maharaja Agrasen. The mound has yielded over 7000 artifacts including silver and copper coins, terracotta seals, and stone sculptures. The most striking discovery is a Buddhist stupa and the ruins of a Hindu temple. These findings prove that Agroha was a cosmopolitan hub on the ancient trade route between Taxila and Mathura. Today, the mound stands as a silent witness to centuries of history, from the Mauryan era to the Tughlaq period. It offers a unique window into the socio-economic life of ancient North India. Walking through the excavated lanes, one can see the precision of ancient brickwork and the strategic layout of the city's defenses. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
