Ahichhatra Castle
Ahichhatra Castle, also known as Adikot, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Northern India, serving as the ancient capital of the North Panchala kingdom. According to the Mahabharata, this was the kingdom of King Drupada, which was later conquered by Arjuna and given to Dronacha rya. The history of this place spans from the Vedic period through the Gupta and Kushan eras until the medieval period. Excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have revealed nine distinct layers of civilization, proving continuous human habitation for over 2,000 years. The site is a massive triangular mound stretching across several acres, containing ruins of temples, residential complexes, and a massive brick fortification wall. For followers of Jainism, it is a sacred pilgrimage site as it is believed to be the place where the 23rd Tirthankara, Lord Parshvanath, attained Kevala Jnana (omniscience). The ancient city was visited by famous Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang in the 7th century, who described seeing dozens of temples and a great Buddhist stupa. Today, the ruins stand as a silent witness to the rise and fall of several mighty Indian dynasties. Visitors can see the remains of the massive ramparts that once protected the city from invaders. The site is spread over an area of about 40 hectares, making it one of the largest ancient settlements discovered in the Ganga valley. By Local Transport: Regular buses and shared tempos ply between Bareilly Satellite Bus Stand and Aonla. Once in Aonla, you can hire a dedicated e-rickshaw or a manual rickshaw to reach the Ahichhatra mounds in Ramnagar. -
