Bhawarnath Temple
Bhawarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is perhaps the most iconic landmark within Azamgarh city. It holds a status similar to the Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi for the local population. The temple is situated on the western edge of the city and is believed to provide instant relief from worldly troubles to those who visit with a pure heart. The history of the temple is tied to a saint named Bhawarnath, who used to graze his cows in this area and discovered a Shiva Lingam. The current structure's foundation was laid in October 1951 and was completed in 1958. It is a major center for the 'Kanwariya' pilgrims during the holy month of Sawan. People believe that any pilgrimage to other major Shiva temples is incomplete without offering prayers here first. The temple complex is expansive and houses several smaller shrines, making it a comprehensive religious site.
