Kamalgad Fort, also known as Kattalgad or Bhelanja, is an ancient hill fort situated in the Wai taluka. Standing at an elevation of 4,511 feet above sea level, it offers one of the most secluded and adventurous trekking experiences near Panchgani. Unlike other forts that have high walls and gateway s, Kamalgad is unique because it lacks traditional man-made fortifications; its sheer cliffs and natural rock formations served as its primary defense. The fort has a rich history, having been under the rule of the Bijapur Sultanate and later the Maratha Empire. In 1818, it was surrendered to the British forces under Major Thatcher. The plateau on top spans about 4 to 6 acres and is mostly flat, covered with wild grass and shrubs. The climb to the fort takes you through dense forests and steep rock patches, making it a favorite for seasoned trekkers. From the summit, one can get an eagle-eye view of Dhom Dam, Pasarni Ghat, and the neighboring Pandavgad Fort. It is a place of absolute silence and raw natural beauty.
