Mandu, Madhya Pradesh, India:
History and Purpose of the Palace: Originally built on an ancient Shiva shrine, this pleasure palace was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Akbar's governor, Shah Badgah, in 1574 AD for Akbar's Hindu consort, Empress Mariam-uz-Zamani (also known as Jodha Bai), reflecting the cultural synthesis of the er a. The site is a unique blend of a recreational retreat and a pilgrimage center. Mughal Connection: It became a favorite retreat for Akbar's eldest son, Jahangir, and is also locally linked to the 15th-century Malwa Sultanate era. The name Nilkanth comes from the ancient Shiva shrine it encompasses.
