Harike Bird Sanctuary

Firozpur, Punjab, India
Harike Bird Sanctuary, also known as Hari-ke-Pattan, is one of the most significant wetlands in India. It was created in 1952 after the construction of a barrage across the confluence of the Beas and Sutlej rivers. This man-made wetland spreads across an area of about 4100 hectares and was declared a Ramsar Site in 1990. It serves as a vital habitat for thousands of migratory birds that fly from Siberia, Central Asia, and the Arctic during the winter months. The sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot, home to several species of turtles, snakes, and the endangered Indus Dolphin. Visitors can witness a serene landscape of deep water, floating marshes, and dense reed beds that provide a perfect escape into nature. It is a must-visit for environmentalists and those seeking peace away from the urban hustle.
