Bear's Cave is a fascinating geological and historical site located within a private coffee estate near the Norton Bungalow. This natural cave is formed by massive boulders and is believed to have been a habitat for bears in the past, giving it its name. Beyond its biological history, the cave hold s significant historical weight as it is said to have served as a secret hideout and escape route for the 18th-century ruler Tipu Sultan. The main part of the cave is situated about 7 feet below the ground level. As you enter, the temperature drops, and the air becomes damp, creating a mysterious subterranean atmosphere. The cave features a labyrinth of narrow passages and chambers that extend deep into the hillside. While only about 60 feet of the cave is easily accessible to the public today due to fallen rocks, it remains a thrilling spot for those who enjoy a bit of exploration. The local tribal community believes that a deeper gorge within the cave leads all the way to the Shevaroy Temple at the top of the hill. The surrounding coffee estate is lush and vibrant, offering a beautiful contrast to the dark, stony interior of the cave. It is a place where history, legend, and nature intersect, making it a unique stop on the Yercaud circuit.
