History Of Bhoothathankettu Barrage

Thattekad, Kerala, India
Bhoothathankettu is a scenic dam and barrage site, which translates literally to 'Monster Fort' or 'Ghost Fort,' a name linked to a local legend stating that the natural granite-rock formations in the Periyar River were set by a 'Bhootham' (ghost/spirit) to divert the river. The modern barrage, cons tructed later, utilizes these ancient rock formations as a foundation, creating a large, tranquil reservoir. Located approximately 6 KMS from the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, it serves as a crucial component of the region’s ecotourism circuit. The barrage holds back the water of the Periyar River, creating an expansive, calm lake that is perfect for boating. The surrounding area is lush with forest cover and is a popular picnic spot for families and tourists. It acts as a natural habitat extension for birds and a variety of aquatic life. The presence of a children's park and a well-maintained garden adds to its appeal as a recreational and leisure destination. It offers a stunning contrast between human engineering (the dam) and raw, geological history (the rock formations), all set within the verdant landscape of the low-lying Western Ghats foothills.
