Hotels Near Ngadak Monastery
Jorethang, Sikkim, India
Ngadak Monastery is one of the oldest and most spiritual structures in South Sikkim, located near the town of Namchi. Built during the reign of Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal in the 17th century, the word "Ngadak" translates to "promise," reflecting the local belief that anyone who visits once is destined to return. This sacred site was originally constructed as a palace for Her Highness Pendi Ongmu, but it was later converted into a center for Buddhist learning. Over the years, the monastery has survived various natural calamities, including major earthquakes that left the old structure in a state of ruin. Despite its weathered appearance, the old gompa exudes an aura of ancient mysticism that modern buildings often lack. A new, grand monastery has been constructed adjacent to the old one to accommodate the growing number of monks and devotees. The site offers a peaceful retreat where the scent of burning incense and the sound of distant mountain winds create a meditative atmosphere. It is a place where history and spirituality intertwine, making it a must-visit for those seeking a deep connection with Sikkim's religious heritage.
