How To Reach Tuivai River

Pherzawl, Manipur, India
The Tuivai River is the longest tributary of the Barak River, originating in the Chin Hills of Myanmar and flowing through Manipur and Mizoram before joining the Barak at the historically and politically significant point of Tipaimukh (locally known as Ruonglevaisuo). The name is derived from Kuki-C hin languages, meaning "curvy river" (tui for water, vai for curved). Sections of the river form the border between Manipur and Mizoram. Historically, the river and its confluence were significant, with the Manipur ruler Bhagyachandra erecting a stone here in 1786 to commemorate a victory. The river valley is a region of immense natural beauty, characterized by dense forest, steep slopes, and a meandering course. It is also the focal point of the controversial Tipaimukh Dam project, designed for flood control and hydroelectric power. The area around its banks in Pherzawl is remote and rugged, attracting those seeking adventurous trekking and unspoiled wilderness, and is a vital ecological corridor.

How to Reach

By Air: Nearest airport is Imphal's Tulihal International Airport (IMF), roughly 260-300 KMS away. Due to extreme remoteness, the best option is to hire a dedicated 4x4 or take the bus to Pherzawl then arrange a river guide.

By Train: Nearest major railhead is Silchar (SCL) or Jiribam (JIR). From the station, take a long-distance taxi to Pherzawl HQs, then proceed with specialized transport.

By Road: Access is difficult. The river area is near Tipaimukh, which is at the end of the line for most local transport routes. A robust 4x4 vehicle and an experienced driver are essential for the last stretch of district roads.

By Local Transport: Shared Sumo taxis run from Churachandpur to Pherzawl and, in some cases, all the way to Tipaimukh village (seasonal). Local boat taxis are needed for river travel.
