Jalmandir

Rajgir, Bihar, India
Sanctity in the Middle of Water: Jalmandir is a world-renowned Jain temple located in Pawapuri. It is built on the spot where Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, attained Nirvana in 527 BCE. The name literally translates to "Water Temple" because it is situated in the middle of a vast lake filled w ith red lotuses. Legend says that the demand for the holy ashes of Lord Mahavira was so high that a large amount of soil was scooped out from around his funeral pyre, eventually creating this massive pond. It is a place of profound silence and spiritual purity.
