Kuruva Island

Wayanad, Kerala, India
An Uninhabited Riverine Haven : Kuruva Island, locally known as Kuruva Dweep, is a massive protected river delta on the Kabini River. Spreading over 950 acres, this cluster of islands is uninhabited and remains one of the most ecologically sensitive zones in the Western Ghats. The island is accessi ble only by bamboo rafts or fiber boats provided by the Forest Department, adding a sense of adventure to the journey. Once on the island, you are surrounded by a dense canopy of evergreen trees, rare orchids, and herbal plants that have remained untouched for centuries. It is a haven for birdwatchers, with many migratory species choosing these quiet woods for nesting. The gentle streams of the Kabini River flow between the small islets, creating shallow pools where visitors can wade through the water. The silence of the island is only broken by the chirping of birds and the rustle of bamboo leaves. Due to its ecological importance, the number of visitors is strictly regulated daily to prevent environmental degradation. It is a perfect example of eco-tourism where the beauty of the wild is preserved for future generations to appreciate.

Bamboo Architecture and Natural Trails : There are no permanent concrete structures on Kuruva Island to preserve its natural state. The "architecture" here consists of ingenious bamboo bridges constructed by the local tribal communities and the Forest Department to help tourists cross the smaller streams without stepping on the delicate riverbeds. These bridges are replaced annually after the monsoon. The island spans 950 acres, making it one of the largest river deltas in India. The trails are naturally formed by foot traffic over the years, winding through giant bamboo groves and ancient trees. The main entrance facilities at Palvelicham or Cheriyamala are simple wooden sheds that house the ticket counters and life jacket stations, designed to have a zero-carbon footprint on the river banks.
