Maharana Pratap Sagar

Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh, India
Maharana Pratap Sagar, popularly known as Pong Dam, is a massive man-made reservoir constructed on the Beas River. It is one of the most important wetlands in India and was declared a Ramsar site due to its ecological significance. Spanning an enormous area, the lake is surrounded by the Shivalik h ills and offers a stunning contrast to the high peaks of the Dhauladhars. The reservoir is a major destination for birdwatchers, as it hosts hundreds of thousands of migratory birds every winter, including the rare Bar-headed Goose from Siberia. Apart from its ecological value, the lake is a hub for water sports and adventure. The vast blue expanse of water provides a serene setting for boating, angling, and even swimming in designated areas. The history of the dam is also fascinating, as the rising waters submerged several ancient temples, which reappear during the summer months when the water level recedes. It is a perfect day-trip destination from Bir for those who love water bodies and wildlife. The area remains relatively quiet compared to other tourist spots in the state, offering a sense of vastness and tranquility.
