Manipur Zoological Gardens

Ima Keithel, Manipur, India
The Manipur Zoological Gardens, established on October 2, 1976, is a premier wildlife conservation center located at the foothills of the pine-growing hillocks of Iroisemba. Spanning an area of about 8 hectares, this garden is renowned as the "Jewel Box" of the state because it provides a protected habitat for many endangered and rare species of flora and fauna. The primary attraction is the Sangai (Brow-antlered deer), which is one of the rarest deer species in the world and is often called the "Dancing Deer" of Manipur. Visitors can witness these graceful creatures in a setting that closely mimics their natural marshy habitat. Apart from the Sangai, the zoo houses over 55 species of birds and various mammals like the Hoolock Gibbon, Slow Loris, and the Himalayan Black Bear. The lush green fields and serene environment make it a favorite spot for families and nature enthusiasts. The zoo serves as a vital educational hub, fostering awareness about the biodiversity of Northeast India. It is recognized by the Central Zoo Authority as a coordinating zoo for the conservation breeding of the Sangai and Serow. The tranquility of the pine forests surrounding the enclosures adds a unique aesthetic charm to the experience. Travelers often find the chirping of exotic birds a refreshing escape from the city noise.
