Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary

NIZAMABAD, Telangana, India
Established in 1952, the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of approximately 130 square kilometers. It was once the private hunting grounds of the Nizams of Hyderabad, but today it stands as a protected haven for a diverse array of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is unique because it encompa sses both forest land and the wetlands created by the Pocharam Lake. It is home to several endangered and beautiful species, including the Leopard, Wolf, Sloth Bear, and the Four-horned Antelope. For bird lovers, it is a paradise, especially during the winter months when migratory birds flock to the reservoir islands. The vegetation is primarily dry deciduous forest, featuring trees like Teak, Eucalyptus, and Babul. The sanctuary provides an essential ecological corridor for wildlife moving between the Medak and Nizamabad districts. Visitors can explore the sanctuary via designated trekking trails or by taking a safari ride. The Eco-Tourism Center located within the sanctuary provides educational information about the local ecosystem and the importance of conservation. It is an ideal spot for those who want to experience the raw beauty of the Indian wilderness without the crowds of larger national parks.
