Pualreng Wildlife Sanctuary

Kolasib, Mizoram, India
Sanctuary Overview: Pualreng Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area covering approximately 50 sq km of tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. It was officially notified in 2004 to protect the dwindling populations of rare primates and birds. The sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot, home to t he elusive Hoolock Gibbon, which can often be heard singing in the early morning. Other inhabitants include the Slow Loris, Leopard, and various species of deer. The terrain is rugged, with altitudes ranging from 260 meters to 750 meters above sea level. This variation in elevation creates diverse micro-habitats that support a wide range of flora, including rare orchids and medicinal plants. The sanctuary is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 100 species recorded, including the Great Indian Hornbill. The dense canopy provides a cool and refreshing environment, making it a perfect escape for nature enthusiasts. Conservation efforts here focus on preventing illegal logging and hunting to maintain the delicate ecological balance. A visit to Pualreng is not just about sighting animals; it is about experiencing the raw power of an undisturbed forest ecosystem. The sanctuary remains one of the less-explored gems of Mizoram, offering a sense of solitude and adventure that is hard to find in more popular parks. It serves as a vital corridor for wildlife moving between different forest patches in the region.
