Overview: Kottachedu Teak Forest is an expansive and tranquil forest area situated on the outskirts of Yercaud, approximately 11 km north-east of the town center, along the Yercaud – Kuppanur Road. This forest, primarily consisting of tall, cultivated Teak Wood trees (Tectona grandis), forms a sig nificant green lung for the region. Historically, it is believed to have been an indigenous tribal settlement area that was later vacated due to a major plague, after which the government undertook extensive teak plantation efforts. Today, it is a haven for nature lovers, offering a deep immersion into the quiet solitude of a managed forest ecosystem. The Vanier River (also known as the Vaniyar River) gracefully flows through the heart of the forest before making its way down to the Vanier Dam in the plains, adding a picturesque element and supporting the rich local biodiversity. The forest is known for its flourishing wildlife, which includes, but is not limited to, different species of birds like the beautiful Paradise Flycatchers and Swallows, as well as mammals like foxes, anteaters, and occasionally, bison. The drive and subsequent walks through the shaded, towering teak avenues are enchanting and memorable, providing a cool, crisp atmosphere even on a sunny day.
