Shirui Lily Conservation Area
The Shirui Lily Conservation Area is a protected ecological zone situated atop the majestic Shirui Kashong Peak in Ukhrul, Manipur. It is the only place on Earth where the rare and endangered Shirui Lily (Lilium mackliniae) grows naturally in its wild habitat. This bell-shaped, pinkish-white flower was discovered in 1946 by the English botanist Frank Kingdon-Ward and was named after his wife, Jean Macklin. The conservation area spans across high-altitude grasslands and temperate forests at an elevation of nearly 2,835 meters above sea level. The lily is celebrated as the State Flower of Manipur and is a symbol of the state's unique biodiversity. The area is not just about the flowers; it is a vital ecosystem that supports various rare bird species like the Blyth’s Tragopan and diverse orchids. The trek to the conservation area is a spiritual journey for the local Tangkhul Naga people, who believe the flowers are protected by the goddess Philava. Due to the fragile nature of the lily and the increasing threats from climate change and invasive species, the area is under strict conservation protocols. Visitors are required to follow eco-friendly guidelines to ensure the survival of this botanical treasure. The panoramic view from the peak offers a 360-degree look at the Lairok Maru region and the distant peaks of Myanmar. The air at this altitude is incredibly pure, and the mist rolling over the lily-covered slopes creates an ethereal atmosphere that stays with you long after you leave. It is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the rare wonders of the natural world.
