Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple
Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple is an ancient and highly revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha (Vinayagar) and is one of the oldest in Puducherry, predating the French occupation. The name "Manakula" is derived from 'Manal' (sand) and 'Kulam' (pond near the sea), referring to its original loc ation near a tank close to the bay—a feature that has since disappeared. Despite multiple attempts by the French to demolish it in the 18th century, the temple miraculously survived, reinforcing the faith of the local Tamil population and becoming a powerful symbol of spiritual resilience. The temple is famous for its massive, intricately carved golden chariot, which is used during major festivals. Its inner walls and ceilings are adorned with 40 intricate friezes detailing the legends of Lord Ganesha, and the main sanctum is a beautiful example of traditional Dravidian temple architecture. A unique and charming feature is the temple's elephant, Lakshmi, who traditionally stands near the entrance to offer blessings to devotees by gently tapping them on the head with its trunk.
